Everything about lessons, plans, payments and teaching on Wavelength — written the way the platform actually works.
Getting started
What is Wavelength?
A marketplace for 1-on-1 Japanese lessons with vetted tutors, held in your browser. Nothing else — no group classes, no other languages, no app to install. Wavelength is for adult learners.
How do I start?
Browse tutors, then book a 25-minute trial with whoever looks right. If you click, start a plan with them and your course books ship free. If you don't click, trial someone else — there's no obligation and no subscription until you choose one.
What level do I need to be?
Any. Tutors list the JLPT levels they teach, from complete beginner (N5 and below) up to N1, and you can filter the marketplace by level, specialty and price.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Wavelength runs entirely in the browser on any laptop, tablet or phone with a camera and microphone.
What times will I see?
Everything is shown in your own timezone, which you set in Settings — never the tutor's. Tutors teach from all over the world, so most hours of the day have someone available.
Pricing & plans
What does it cost?
Two things are for sale. A trial lesson (25 minutes) at the tutor's trial rate, from about $3. And a plan: a pack of 5 lessons at that tutor's per-lesson rate. A $45/lesson tutor is $225 per pack — the per-lesson price is the tutor's listed rate, nothing more.
Can I just buy one lesson?
No — apart from the trial, lessons come through a plan. Plans are what make progress stick: a steady rhythm, the same teacher, and materials that build week to week. You can cancel a plan at any time, so nothing traps you.
How do plan lessons work?
Each pack drops 5 lessons into your balance with that tutor. You book any open slot in their calendar and a lesson is used automatically — no checkout, no card. The next pack is billed 5 weeks after the last, or as soon as you've had all 5 lessons, whichever comes first. Your balance and full history live on the Billing page.
What happens to lessons I don't use?
Each pack's lessons are valid for 10 weeks from the day they arrive — the 5 weeks they're meant for, plus one more cycle to roll over into. After that, anything still unbooked expires; we warn you a few days before, and every expiry is itemised in your credit activity.
Can I take lessons faster than my plan?
Yes — the 5 lessons are yours to schedule however you like, so you can do two in a week if your tutor has room. Once you've had all 5, the next pack is billed straight away and you carry on.
What if my tutor changes their price?
You'll be emailed before anything bills. The new price only applies from your next renewal, and every lesson already in your balance keeps the price you paid. If the new rate doesn't work for you, cancel before the renewal date.
How do I pay, and in what currency?
By card through Stripe at checkout — card details never touch Wavelength's servers. All prices are charged in US dollars; your bank may add its own conversion fee for non-USD cards.
What about course books and materials?
All teaching materials are provided by Wavelength and included in your plan — the JLPT prep materials used in class, and physical course books shipped free to your address when you start your first plan. Lessons run online from day one, so nothing waits on the post.
Booking & rescheduling
How far ahead can I book?
Up to two weeks of your tutor's published availability is open at any time, and lessons must be booked at least 12 hours before they start.
Can I reschedule a lesson?
Yes — that's how changing a lesson works on Wavelength. Up to 24 hours before it starts, hit Reschedule on the lesson page and pick any other open time with your tutor. It's free, nothing else changes, and you can do it as often as plans demand.
Can I cancel a lesson instead?
Lessons aren't cancelled — they're rescheduled. A booked lesson is yours: if the time stops working, move it (free with 24 hours' notice). This keeps tutors' calendars dependable, which is what keeps good tutors on Wavelength.
What happens inside 24 hours?
The lesson is committed — it can no longer be moved, and it takes place as booked. If something urgent has come up, message your tutor directly; many will happily agree a new time with you. For truly exceptional circumstances, you can reach support by replying to any Wavelength email and we'll review the situation.
What if my tutor cancels?
You're always made whole — your lesson credit is returned, or a trial payment refunded — and the slot reopens for someone else. Tutor-initiated cancellations are the one case where money moves back.
What if I miss a lesson?
A tutor can mark a lesson as a no-show within 7 days of it finishing; that lesson isn't returned, since your tutor waited for you. If something has gone wrong, message your tutor — most are flexible.
Can I learn with more than one tutor?
Yes. You can hold one live plan per tutor, and plans with several tutors at once. Lesson credits belong to the tutor you bought them from — they can't be moved between teachers.
How do I switch tutors?
Cancel your plan (your paid cycle still runs to the end and those lessons stay usable), then trial someone new. Trial as many tutors as you like — one trial each.
In the classroom
How does the lesson itself work?
A private 1-on-1 video call in your browser, with chat and screen sharing built in. The room opens 15 minutes before the start time and stays open until 30 minutes after the lesson ends. It's private to the two of you — a shared link admits nobody else.
What happens in a trial?
25 minutes to meet, check your level, and agree what to work on. It isn't a sales pitch — it's a real lesson at a shorter length, and how you find out whether this is the teacher for you.
Will I be reminded?
Yes — an email the day before each lesson, and another shortly before it starts. Your upcoming lessons are always on your dashboard.
Can I message my tutor between lessons?
Yes, from the Messages tab. It's the right place for questions, homework, or asking to focus on something particular next time.
Can I review my tutor?
After each completed lesson you can leave one review — a rating and a note. Reviews are public on the tutor's profile and are what helps the next student choose well.
Account & billing
Where do I see what I've paid?
The Billing page: every order and refund, your live plans with their renewal dates, your lesson balance per tutor, and a full credit history showing every lesson added, used, returned or expired.
How do I cancel my plan?
From Billing, in two clicks. Renewals stop, the cycle you've paid for runs to its end date, and every lesson already granted stays usable until its 10 weeks are up — nothing is clawed back. You can undo the cancellation any time before the cycle ends.
What if a renewal payment fails?
The plan is flagged as having a payment issue and no new lessons are added until payment succeeds. Lessons already in your balance stay usable in the meantime.
What's the refund policy?
Wavelength doesn't offer refunds. The model is built so you never need one: the trial is small, plans bill only 5 lessons at a time and cancel any time before renewal, lessons reschedule free with 24 hours' notice, and a tutor-initiated cancellation always returns what you paid. If something genuinely exceptional happens, reply to any Wavelength email to reach support and we'll review it case by case.
How do I change my email, timezone or goals?
In Settings. Your timezone drives every time shown on the site, and your JLPT goal helps us suggest tutors who teach at that level.
I forgot my password.
Use the 'Forgot password' link on the login page — you'll get a single-use reset link by email that expires shortly after it's sent.
Still deciding?
