Everything about lessons, plans, payments and teaching on Wavelength — written the way the platform actually works.
Applying to teach
Who can teach on Wavelength?
Native Japanese speakers, or teachers certified at JLPT N1. Every application is reviewed by hand — we're building a small roster of teachers we'd recommend to a friend, not an open directory.
How do I apply?
Through the tutor application: your background, the levels and specialties you teach, your rate, and your weekly availability. You'll get an email when a decision is made.
What do I need to teach here?
A reliable internet connection, a webcam and microphone, a quiet space, and hours you can genuinely commit to each week. Everything else — the classroom, scheduling, payments, materials — is provided.
Do I need my own teaching materials?
No. Wavelength provides all course materials, including the JLPT prep track and the physical books students receive. You're free to bring your own supplements, but you're never expected to build a curriculum from scratch.
Pay, fees & trials
How much do I earn?
You set a fixed salary — your per-lesson rate — and students buy plans of 5 lessons at exactly that rate. Wavelength's platform fee starts at 35% and falls as you teach more hours, down to 15% for the most experienced tutors, so your take-home rises from 65% to 85% of every lesson.
Am I paid for trials?
Not on their own. A 25-minute trial is your audition, and it pays nothing while it sits unconverted. The moment that student starts a plan with you, the trial converts and you're paid 50% of the trial fee for it — so the trials that turn into students do pay you, and your dashboard marks each one converted or not.
Are there other fees?
One, and only on JLPT-focus plans: a flat $2 per lesson for the Wavelength exam-prep materials used in class. Conversation lessons carry no materials fee. Both the platform fee and the materials fee are shown per lesson in your earnings table.
When does a lesson count as earned?
When it's completed. Lessons complete automatically at their end time, so your earnings don't depend on you remembering to close anything out.
What if a student doesn't show up?
You keep the lesson fee. You can flag a no-show for up to 7 days after the lesson, and it doesn't reduce your payout. Students can't cancel booked lessons at all — inside 24 hours a lesson is committed, and further out they can only move it to another of your open slots (you're emailed whenever that happens).
What if I cancel a lesson?
The student is always made whole — refunded, or their lesson credit returned — and the slot reopens. Cancel sparingly: reliability is most of what students are buying.
How do I get paid out?
Every completed lesson accrues to your earnings, shown on your dashboard with gross, fee and net per lesson. Payouts are arranged directly by the Wavelength team while we're small; self-serve payout scheduling is on the roadmap.
Changing your salary
Can I change my rate?
Yes, from your availability page — but only forward. A change prices new purchases only; it never re-prices something a student has already paid for.
Why does a change take up to five weeks?
Because students buy lessons in packs of 5, renewed every 5 weeks at most. Lessons and plan credits already sold are honoured at your previous rate until they're used up, and each live plan moves to your new rate at its next renewal. So the change is immediate for new students and gradual for existing ones — up to one full cycle to land completely.
Do I still get paid the old rate for old bookings?
Yes, and exactly. Lessons are paid at the rate they were sold at, oldest first, until every lesson bought at your previous rate has been taught. You never lose money that was already collected on your behalf.
Why can't I change my salary again?
While lessons sold at your previous rate are still unused, your salary is locked — otherwise three or four different prices would be in flight at once and neither you nor your students could tell what a lesson is worth. Your availability page shows exactly what's still settling; once those lessons are taught, the lock lifts.
Do students find out?
Yes — anyone on a live plan with you is emailed before the new price bills, and they can cancel before the renewal if it doesn't work for them. Their existing lessons keep the price they paid.
Teaching day to day
How does my schedule work?
You paint your weekly hours in your own timezone, and students book concrete 50-minute lessons inside them, at least 12 hours ahead. Changing your hours only affects new bookings — anything already booked stays put.
How do students book me?
Trial students pay at checkout. Plan students spend a lesson from their balance with you — no payment step — so once someone subscribes, booking is frictionless and repeat lessons happen without friction or negotiation.
What does the classroom give me?
A private browser-based room with video, chat and screen sharing, opening 15 minutes before each lesson. Nothing to install, and no personal contact details exchanged.
How do ratings work?
Students can leave one review per completed lesson. Your rating, review count and lessons taught appear on your profile, and lifetime lessons taught is what moves you down the platform-fee tiers.
Rules & conduct
Can I take a student off-platform?
No. Moving payments or lessons off Wavelength is grounds for removal — and it strips both sides of everything the platform guarantees: the refund policy, the no-show protection, the classroom, and a record of what was paid.
What's expected of me?
Show up on time, teach the lesson the student booked, and treat people with respect. Harassment, discrimination, or recording a participant without consent leads to suspension or removal.
Am I an employee of Wavelength?
No — tutors are independent providers. You set your own rate and hours, you're responsible for the content of your lessons and for your own tax obligations, and Wavelength provides the platform that connects you with students.
